Creating a sports technology ecosystem

Get to the Euros!

The year was 2016, the European Cup was just around the corner. Samsung initially wanted to create an incredible App experience with their Tablets which could help them sell more Smart TVs in time for the Euros.

Over time we had done such a great job with the tablet, users were asking for a phone app, which then lead to us creating a watch app and eventually, with new hardware, utilised the Edge on phone devices

Create an unparalleled ecosystem of mobile devices combined with the Smart TV.

UX at the core

We had to look at how users would use the App and compare competitors with their navigation system to pull out simple information required. We drew up some paper prototypes of ‘lanes’ containing the right information a user would want to see.

On the right is an example of a Barcelona fan trying to see if Messi is injured. We cut down the steps to find information vital to the fans.

Homepage, Matchpage

The Homepage was the centre of all things happening for the fan! We were able to give the fan everything they needed to know about any club, league or competition they want to follow.

For fans, shotmaps add a layer of depth to game analysis. They can track the shot patterns of their favorite players and teams in real-time or across seasons, enhancing their understanding of the game’s nuances.

During live matches, a real-time shotmap can provide crucial information to both players and coaches about how the opponent is defending certain zones or where the best scoring opportunities lie.

What an Edge case

Samsung was going through some hardware updates and changes which would improve the interactivity with the user and their device without having the App open. This included being able to be notified a goal happened in a game you’re following without looking at the screen.

Watch for wear

Not originally in the scope, but eventually with success and growth of the app, we were able to create one of the first Samsung Gear Apps too.

This was able to track games whilst Live and give you updates as you went along.

Data was king.

The entire application was all based around data visualisation. It put the app ahead of all its competitors. With data we were able to show off “bragging rights” to the real football fanatics. Who was the better team, striker, defender, goalkeeper compared to anyone?

We were able to answer that.

Smart TV Power

The Smart TV was designed to be non-intrusive however showing data which can be controlled. When it came to designing for the TV I had to think about the Hot zones of where information was coming up.
There was only one Safe Zone I was allowed to use to put my designs.

Samsung KICK had an average score of 4.1 out of 5 on Google Play store, in the first year of development, it was downloaded over 3million times so far with over 500,000 active users. It was bought by Goal.com and became their official app and has over 4.5million downloads
